Do Diets Really Work?
Do diets ever work? Its a question most people dont actually ask because they want to believe so badly that they have found the solution to all of their weight loss problems. However the facts cannot be argued with, around 90% of people fail when trying to undertake a new diet. Perhaps part of the problem is that people think that they only need to look at what they eat and forget about the other important issues that contribute to weight problems. There are literally 1000s of diets with a few famous ones showing up every few years. But what makes them successful or failures?
Extreme diets are usually categorised by the drastic nature of the regime. The Atkins diet is probably one of the most famous and evolves eating mainly fats and proteins in the form of meat. Its an interesting idea and it does work for some to an extent in that the fat and protein content of the food keep you full for longer. However practicality as with all diets must come into the equation. Is it possible to eat 90% meat all the time? It can be very difficult for example when at work where all that may be available to you is sandwiches and other high carb food. The reality is that the world just isnt setup for the Atkins diet just yet. And we know the more work a diet requires the harder it is to maintain.
In recent times there have been some new concepts in the Diet market, mainly looking at how psychology affects how we eat. New experts like Dr Phil and more recently Paul McKenna preach that the mind is the key to losing weight and that unless you change how you think about food you will never be able to permanently lose weight. Paul McKennas main concept is that you eat slower and more consciously and so reducing the temptation to overeat. This argument does seem to ring true in that most weight gain occurs when people arnt thinking about what they are eating and most importantly failing to realise when they are full. However once again it still requires quite alot of dedication in that you need to be aware at all times of your actions around food and this could probably be said of all diets.
In reality it would be concluded that common sense about what you eat and how much could help people more than most of the diets out there. When it comes down to it you cant argue with simple biology in that energy in equals energy out. With this in mind you have to realise just how important exercise is. A cheap pair of sneakers may be all thats needed to get you started burning calories and maintaining your weight. Its worth noting that people who exercise while on a diet drastically increase their chances of success. For many a personal trainer could be a great help as they will be able to help with what type of things you should be eating along with how you should work out.
As you can see there are 1000s of diet ideas on the market and there may be a special one out there for you. Most are just a re-hash of old ideas or so extreme that no-one will ever last more than a week! However with a little research you could just stick to the basics and get results on your own terms!
